How it works.

Today, most liquid-based fog machines work by rapidly heating a mixture of water and glycol to generate vapor.

The expanding vapor is released from the nozzle, where the hot, humid vapor mixes with the cooler air to form a mist.

Is the smoke from a fog machine harmful?

As long as your fog machine is used correctly, you can breathe safely. Most fog machine fluids are made from a water and glycol solution, which is not considered hazardous but can cause breathing problems or throat irritation in some people.

Is there a difference between smoke and fog machines?

Fog machines produce a similar effect to low fog machines, but the heated smoke produced by fog machines rises and spreads throughout the room, while low fog machines produce cold liquid particles and fog stay close to the ground. Use smoke machines for: shows, concerts, parties, scary effects.

Do smoke machines use dry ice?

Machines that use dry ice work by constantly heating the water to maintain the fog. Simple machines for preparing dry ice or air for hardening are also available. Dry ice is cold enough to cause frostbite – use protective gloves when handling it.

What is stage smoke made of?

Water vapor can be used to make theatrical smoke, which is harmless. It can also be made with liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide (from dry ice). In both cases, there is fog when the water vapor in the air condenses.
